Thoughtful Thursday: Banned Book Week 2015: Sept. 27 to Oct. 3

For those who aren't aware, but hopefully you are if you're book-savvy, this week is Banned Book Week. Launched in 1982, it was a response to the growing amount of book censorship. Take a moment, if you will, this week to select a book that isn't universally accepted, that's been taken off library shelves for its content, one that has pissed off the conservative collective.

At one point or another, a lot of the greats have been banned. Some of my personal favorites: The Great Gatsby, Wuthering Heights, To Kill A Mockingbird. More modern classics: Harry Potter, The Outsiders, The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

There's a reason that peoples and government have banned books for countless centuries. This isn't some new thing. Words have power. They can change entire histories, events, collapse nations, and uproot tyranny. It's not just books. It's all ideas and thoughts that are dangerous to the status quo.

In summation, go read what others think you shouldn't. You've no clue what there might be to find in those pages. Bottom line, don't let other people think for you. Celebrate your freedom to read whatever you want.
